Environmental Specialist (7/1/10)

This position is for an Environmental Specialist with an Environmental firm in the Dayton area. The ideal candidate will have experience in Phase I and Phase II Site Assessments, and Asbestos Hazardous Evaluation & Inspection. Lead base paint inspection a plus. This candidate will not do abatement, just the oversight and project design. They will be doing various risk assessments for mold, radon, air quality and wetlands.

This position will be for about 45-50 hours per week and there could be some evening work involved. It will start out as a 1 month contract. However, there is a possibility it could go into more of a permanent position. The pay is $20/hr and 1.5 for overtime. This position will most likely start June 14th but could possibly be pushed up to the 10th or 11th.

Biosafety Officer (6/30/10)

Battelle is currently seeking a BIOSAFETY Officer to support Battelle's growing biomedical research operations. This position is located in West Jefferson, OH. Relocation assistance may be available.

Primary Function: To ensure the safety and health of staff in a professional, ethical manner and to be accountable for the elimination or reduction of known hazards. Develops, recommends and implements programs, policies and procedures for effective control of safety and health hazards. Monitors and controls the effectiveness of BCO's compliance programs and provides consulting services and technical leadership to all organizational levels in the area of occupational safety and health.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Establishes, maintains and manages exposure monitoring surveys for biological and physical hazards to assess short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic) health risks to staff from occupational exposure to biological agents.
  2. Establishes, maintains and manages specific programs that reduce or prevent conditions that adversely impact the health of laboratory staff.
  3. Develops effective controls, procedures and communications that will significantly reduce the risk of serious occupational illness and injuries.
  4. Prepares technical reports and training modules based on expert interpretation of measurements, observations, technical publications and regulations to communicate concerns and corrective measures and to document conditions.
  5. Assesses and analyzes the potential health and safety risks of research projects which and determine effective engineering or administrative controls to mitigate those risks.
  6. Conducts facility audits to ensure that safety and health programs are being carried out in an effective manner and to identify deficiencies and unsafe work practices or conditions.
  7. Develops and participates in health and safety committees by providing guidance and expertise on health and safety issues.
  8. Responds to requests for assistance or responds to emergencies that could affect the health or safety of staff members.
  9. Acts as lead BIOSAFETY subject matter expert during regulatory inspections and periodic client assessments.
  10. Participates as subject matter expert during incident investigations and causal analysis reviews.

Director of Safety (4/7/10)

The Builders Exchange of Central Ohio, the state’s oldest local construction trade association is expanding its emphasis on professional development programs. The BX is currently seeking a Director of Safety. The role of the Director in this fast-paced position is divided into four areas of responsibility:

1. Safety Department Operations: Working with the Director of Professional Development and department staff, the Director prepares and administers dozens of construction specific safety courses annually and coordinates an annual awards program. The Director is also responsible for coordinating more than 100 volunteers, and developing and overseeing the department budget and business plan.

2. Marketing, Sales and Communication: Works with part-time staff to coordinate news articles, brochures, faxes, e-mails and telemarketing to promote programs. Writes and edits annual safety magazine. The Director will continually remain updated on industry safety issues, develop positive relationships with regulatory agencies and represent construction industry safety issues in public and government forums.

3. Program Development: Is responsible for researching, developing and evaluating special safety needs.

4. Manage the Safety Council of Greater Columbus (SCGC): Oversees operations of the SCGC. This is a separate organization that is sponsored by the Builders Exchange. The Director plans 12 meetings and an awards presentation for approximately 350 monthly attendees. Responsibilities include securing sponsorships, managing the budget, coordinating volunteers, writing speeches and presenting to the group. In addition, the position also manages all government filings and an audit from the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.

The successful candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in communications or a

business-related field. A minimum of three years association management experience and knowledge of adult education, event planning and budget development is preferred. Flexibility in work hours is required.
